Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is "checking"?
A: Checking refers to the natural cracks in wood. Checking happens as wood releases moisture. The normal checking in logs is not a defect and only enhances the style of the log furniture.
Q: Will you create a custom piece out of my own wood?
A: Of course! If you have a special or favorite tree that needs to be removed for some reason, why not let us use your tree to create a lasting memory and a beautiful piece of log furniture to enhance your home?
We are not limited to the items and ideas you see on our site. We are willing to listen to your ideas and work with you to create products that you can appreciate and enjoy for generations to come.
Q: What kind of saw mill is used?
A: Treemendous Designs uses a portable Wood Mizer saw mill to cut our customized slabs for all tables, chairs and stair parts. Using our Wood Mizer saw mill allows us to make many table tops in just one piece rather than many smaller pieces laminated together. This ensures a more refined look and gives you the upscale country charm to enjoy for years. No two pieces of log furniture are alike!
We also do custom sawing of all types.
Q: What type of wood is best?
A: All of the hardwoods that are native to Indiana are very durable. Red oak, ash and maple are very stable, which means they do not crack or check as easily.
Though locust and hickory may crack, they are very strong and unique woods. These characteristics make very beautiful grains, unique shapes and color variation for the style of log furniture pieces that we produce. No matter what type of wood you prefer, our log furniture creates a bit of country charm for your décor.
Q: What types of stains are used?
A: We do not typically use stains, so all handcrafted pieces are left in their natural colors. Instead, we use a glossy or satin clearcoat finish to create our exquisite furniture and retain the comfortable, country appeal of our log furniture.
However, stains are an option for those who prefer it. Each piece is customized to meet your individual tastes.
Q: What finishes are used?
A: For interior furniture:
To bring out the natural grain of the wood furniture we use a clear polyurethane, which provides a hard, durable finish that is resistant to the wear and tear of daily use. By using a clear polyurethane, there is no unnatural coloring or staining of the wood. Instead, it enhances the beauty of the grain and gives each customized piece a rustic charm for your home or lodge.
For exterior furniture:
Spar varnish is a clear, exterior grade urethane that gives a weather resistant finish to preserve the outdoor pieces of log furniture.
